Frequently Asked Questions

How secure is Permafiles?

Permafiles uses the open source Nextcloud platform with end‑to‑end encryption, secure EU hosting, and a zero knowledge privacy model. Your files are encrypted before upload, stored on protected infrastructure, and accessible only with your personal encryption keys.

Your stored data is designed for 99.999999999% annual durability - often described as 11 nines of durability.

In simple terms, this means the risk of losing a file due to a storage failure is extremely low - approximately 1 file in 100 billion files could be lost per year! Permafiles uses S3-compatible cloud storage designed for 11-nines annual data durability, providing an additional layer of protection for your stored files.

What does GDPR mean for Permafiles?

‍Permafiles uses European-hosted infrastructure and storage, with Nextcloud server infrastructure hosted in Germany and customer file storage currently provided from the UK.

This means the datacenter follows approved security practices, protects personal data properly, and can prove it through official certification. In simple terms, it’s a datacenter that has been verified to handle your data safely, legally, and in full compliance with European privacy rules.

What makes Permafiles different from Big Tech cloud providers?

Unlike Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud, Permafiles does not scan, analyse, or monetise your data. We provide private cloud hosting without advertising, tracking, or behavioural profiling.

What sort of performance can I expect?

You can expect lightning-fast uploads and downloads, instant previews of photos and videos, rapid syncing across devices, and near-zero latency when opening documents, all powered by NVMe storage technology.

How does encryption work?

Permafiles uses Nextcloud security features and HTTPS/TLS to protect data in transit, together with account-security controls such as two-factor authentication. Nextcloud also supports additional encryption features for supported configurations.

How do I back up and sync my data?

You can back up and sync your data using the Nextcloud desktop or mobile app, which provides automatic synchronization across all your devices.
